『누구도 벼랑 끝에 서지 않도록』, 이문수 지음

삶과 죽음을 테마로 책을 큐레이션하는 강릉의 북카페 ‘인생서가‘에서 만났던 책, 『누구도 벼랑 끝에 서지 않도록』은 ‘청년밥상 문간’을 운영하는 이문수 신부님이 쓰신 에세이입니다. 

저는 이 책을 2024년 쯤, 강릉과 서울을 오가는 KTX 기차 안에서 주로 읽었던 기억이 나요. 강릉에서 로컬캐스트를 창업하고 덜컥 예비 사회적기업에 지정되었을 때, 문화 예술을 매개로 고립된 청년들의 관계를 연결하는 일을 하고 싶었지만 사실은 참 막막했거든요. 그래서 강릉과 서울을 오가며 교육도 받고, 당사자 청년들을 만나 그들의 목소리를 들어왔어요. 그런 상황에서 책장에 놓인 이 책이 보여 읽기 시작했습니다.
 
이문수 신부님의 이야기를 통해 제가 어떤 삶의 태도로 청년들을 만나야 하는지 배울 수 있었습니다. 나의 작은 선의가 누군가에게는 삶을 살아가는 큰 용기가 될 수 있음을 느꼈고, 현재의 내 선택을 믿고 나아갈 수 있었습니다. 조금 더 다정한 사람이 되기 위해 노력하고, 나의 말에 책임질 수 있는 어른이 되는 것. 그 약속을 지키는 일. 나의 삶을 더 이롭게 하는 방법인 것 같습니다.

So That No One Stands at the Edge by Lee Munsu

This essay was written by Father Lee Mun-su, who runs “Youth Meal Table Mungan,” and I first encountered it at Insaeng Seoga, a book café in Gangneung that curates books on the themes of life and death.

I remember reading this book mostly on the KTX train between Gangneung and Seoul in 2024. At the time, I had just founded Localcast in Gangneung and was unexpectedly designated as a preliminary social enterprise. I wanted to connect isolated young people through culture and the arts - but to be honest, I felt overwhelmed. So I traveled back and forth between Gangneung and Seoul, attending trainings and meeting young people, listening carefully to their voices. During that season of uncertainty, this book caught my eye on a shelf.

Through Father Lee’s stories, I began to learn what kind of attitude I should carry when meeting young people. I realized that a small act of goodwill from me could become great courage for someone else to continue living. It gave me the strength to trust my present choices and keep moving forward. To try to be a little kinder. To become an adult who takes responsibility for their words. To keep that promise. Perhaps that is one way to make my own life more meaningful.
