무소유를 지향하지만 쉽게 버리지 못하는 삶을 살고 있다. 그래서 평소 기념품에 대해 죄책감 같은 걸 가지고 있는데, 이 전시를 보며 기념품이 가진 의미와 가치를 다시금 떠올려 본다.

전시개요

우리는 살아가며 많은 순간을 기억하고 싶어 합니다. 그 기억을 마음에 새기고, 때로는 손에 쥘 수 있는 형태로 남깁니다.
기념은 소중한 순간을 잊지 않으려는 마음에서 시작됩니다. 기념품은 그 마음을 담은 작은 증거입니다.

오늘날, 넘쳐나는 기념과 기념품 속에서 우리는 진정한 기념의 의미를 잊고 있지는 않을까요? 기념의 의미를 다시 묻기 위해 우리는 기념품이라는 물건을 들여다봅니다. 특별한 순간을 남기고 싶은 마음, 함께한 기억을 나누고 싶은 바람, 내 인생의 기억을 손에 쥐고 싶었던 간절함. 작은 물건 하나에 담긴 기념의 의미를 다시 돌아봅니다.

As we live our lives, we all experience many moments we would like to remember. These are the memories we etch into our hearts-and even, from time to time, try to preserve in tangible form. Every act of commemoration is born of the desire to remember, to hold on to something precious. Each and every souvenir, in turn, is a small token of that intention.

Here and now, surrounded on all sides by souvenirs and acts of commemoration, we ask ourselves: have we, perhaps, lost sight of what it truly means to commemorate? To return to this question of why we commemorate, we turn our attention to these objects we call “souvenirs.” The longing to hold onto a special moment; to share a memory with those
who matter; to hold a bit of our lived experience in our hands. Let us reflect anew on the commemorative potential of one small artifact.

기념의 일상
Everyday Commemoration

기념품은 생각할수록 묘한 물건입니다. 사지 않으면 아쉬울 것 같고 막상 사면 짐이 되기도 합니다. 소중하지만 어딘가 애매하고 버리기엔 또 아깝지요. 그렇게 쌓이고 쌓인 기념과 기념품. 어느새 기념은 특별한 일이 아닌 일상의 한 장면이 되었습니다. 지금, 이 벽은 그런 기념의 단면들을 보여줍니다. 기억을 남기려는 마음, 무언가를 간직하려는 습관. 어쩌면 기념은 우리 일상에 가장 흔한 습관일지도 모릅니다.

Souvenirs are slippery things, the more you think about it. We fear we will regret not buying them, but when we do, they can become burdensome. They are precious, yes, but a bit ambiguous; and throwing them away feels like a waste. And just like that, these moments and objects pile up, one after another. Until one day, the act of commemoration itself is no longer something special, but a regular part of everyday life. This wall presents different aspects of such everyday commemoration. The desire to remember, these habits of holding on-in a way, commemoration may actually be the most ordinary practice of our daily lives.

우리는 왜 기념품을 간직할까요? 기념은 기억 가치를 공유하려는 우리의 방식입니다. 특별한 시간을 기억하고 함께한 마음을 나누고 지나온 발자취를 증명하기 위해 사람들은 기념품을 남겼습니다. 기념품은 단순한 추억이 아닙니다. 그것은 기억을 구체화하고 시간을 붙들며 우리 삶의 이야기를 이어가는 물리적 증거입니다. 너무 많아진 기념품들 사이에서 우리는 다시 생각하게 됩니다. 우리가 진정으로 잊지 않고 간직하고 싶은 것은 무엇인지. 기념은 과거에 머무는 것이 아니라 삶을 증명하고 기억을 이어가는 우리 모두의 이야기입니다.


Why do we hold on to souvenirs? Commemoration is our way of sharing the value of remembering. To remember a special moment, to share communal feeling, and to mark the paths we have traversed, people have long left behind souvenirs. A souvenir is more than just a simple recollection. Rather, it gives form to memory, anchoring time and serving as tangible proof of the stories that shape our lives. Amidst today's overabundance of souvenirs, we are prompted to reconsider. What, exactly, do we truly wish to remember and keep close? 누구에게나 기념하고 싶은 순간은 있습니다. 근대 사회 이전만 하더라도 그 기억을 물질로 남길 수 있었던 사람은 극히 일부에 불과했습니다. 이 시기 기념은 흔한 소비가 아닌, 귀한 증명이었습니다. 특별한 기념의 순간을 담은 평생도, 관리의 공덕을 기리기 위해 마을 사람들의 이름을 수놓아 만든 만인산, 노년의 영예를 기린 기해기사계첩과 기로회도 등 기념품은 개인의 특별한 순간을 넘어 삶의 전환점마다 남겨진 기록들은 시대의 가치를 담아낸 기록이 됩니다. 시간을 넘어 모두의 기억 속에 이어집니다. 오늘날 생일이나 졸업, 군 전역처럼 개인의 인생사에도 다양한 기념품이 남습니다. 기념이란 원래 얼마나 소중하고 값진 것이었는지 그 시간을 다시 돌아봅니다.

Every one of us has moments we would like to commemorate. Before the advent of modern society, however, only a privileged few had the ability, to preserve their memories in material form. In this period, commemoration was not a matter of everyday consumption; rather, it was a rare and significant act of recognition. Items like the Pyeongsaengdo (life portrait), capturing milestone moments, the Maninsan, embroidered with the names of numerous villagers to honor the virtues of a local official, and pieces like the Gisagyecheop or Girohoedo, celebrating the dignity of old age,
all reach beyond the scope of personal memory to serve as reflections of era-defining values. These records of watershed moments have endured across time, living on in our collective memory. Today, personal milestones like birthdays, graduations, and military discharges also tend to produce a variety of commemorative objects. In revisiting past practices, we are reminded of how deeply cherished and meaningful the very act of commemoration used to be.

조선 후기 지방관을 지낸 홍기주洪岐周가 은퇴하면서, 자신이 부임지로 있던 지역들을 기념하기 위해 제작한 지도첩입니다. 공직의 여정을 지도로 남긴 개인적 기념의 방식이 인상적입니다.

1720년 | 복제 | 국립중앙박물관 | 국보 | 송성문 기증

1719년 숙종이 주관한 경로잔치를 글과 그림으로 기록한 자료입니다. 이 기사 모임은 이유李濡, 1645~1721 등 고령의 대신 11명이 참석했습니다. 모두 12부를 만들어 1부는 관청에서 보관하고, 나머지는 참석자들에게 나눠줬습니다. 조선 시대 관료 사회의 장수를 기념하고 예우하기 위해 제작된 대표적인 기념품입니다.

기념은 과거를 기억하는 일인 동시에, 오늘을 살아가는 우리의 이야기입니다. 3·1운동의 정신, 광복의 환희는 기억을 거듭하며 오늘의 우리를 만들었습니다. 기억은 개인에게서 시작되어 공동체로 퍼지고 세계로 뻗어갑니다. 누군가를 좋아하는 마음이 모이고 함께한 순간이 쌓이면서 우리는 스스로 새로운 기억의 공동체를 만들어갑니다. 기념은 멈춰 있는 과거가 아닙니다. 기념은 오늘을 살아가는 우리 안에 이어지는 현재형의 기억입니다.

While commemoration is, indeed, about remembering the past, it is also the story of how we live our lives today. Each time we remember the spirit of the March 1st Independence Movement and the joy of liberation, for example, it shapes who we are today. Memory begins with the individual, spreads through the community, and reaches out to the world. What is more, shared moments and heartfelt connections bring people together to form new communities of memory. Commemoration is not a thing of the past, static and still. Commemoration is memory in the present tense, living and breathing within us, here and now.

달력은 날마다 함께하는 익숙한 물건입니다. 그 속에서 빠지지 않는 것이 바로 '기념일’입니다. 기념일은 단순한 날짜를 넘어 같은 시대를 살아가는 사람들이 무엇을 기억하고 무엇에 의미를 부여했는지를 보여줍니다. 여기, 5년 사이에 제작된 세 장의 달력이 있습니다. 불과 몇 년의 차이지만 그 안에는 서로 다른 기념일과 상징이 담겨 있습니다. 기념하고 싶지 않은 날들이 가득하던 시대, 무엇을 기념해야 할지 몰랐던 과도기를 지나 비로소 '우리'라는 정체성을 찾은 뒤에야 기념할 날들을 스스로 정할 수 있게 되었습니다. 우리는 앞으로 무엇을 기억하고, 어떤 시간을 함께 기념하게 될까요?

Beyond the realm of individual recollection, there are memories that we build together, under the banner of “we." The hearts and hopes of those who lived through a given era go on to become part of the identity that defines who we are today. Even the smallest commemorative artifact, like a stamp or badge celebrating Liberation, is imbued with the collective hope we once constructed together. Commemoration does not remain in the past. Any time we return from a trip, we are left holding something in our hands. More than just a simple souvenir, these
things are little tokens that revive the moments of travel, summoning the emotions and landscapes we encountered. The status of "souvenir" is not always limited to special objects. Indeed, our actual memories of a place can sometimes be lost amidst multiple streams of practicality, similarity, and mass production. With the advent of the modern era and the
mainstreaming of tourism writ large, souvenir culture spread faster than ever. From group tours to Geumgangsan during the Japanese colonial period to the rise of mass tourism beginning in the 1960s, travel has become deeply linked to the act of preserving our memories through souvenirs. A single small object, still at your fingertips. The moments and feelings that linger within it are ready to sweep you back into the time-space of your journey. 1960년대, 한국에서도 여행이 조금씩 대중의 일상으로 들어오기 시작했습니다. 사람들은 낯설고 특별한 일상을 가시적인 형태로 남기고자 했습니다. 여행지의 기록을 담은 책자들이 등장했고, 관광기념 사진첩, 엽서 세트, 관광 슬라이드 같은 여행지의 모습을 간직한 것들이 대표적인 기념품으로 자리 잡았습니다.

기념 수건

수건만큼 꾸준히 사랑받은 기념품은 많지 않습니다. 실용성과 상징성을 동시에 지닌 기념 수건은 기념이 일상 깊숙이 들어온 대표적인 예입니다. 결혼식, 개업, 관광, 체육대회, 퇴직, 시상식, 생일, 심지어 장례까지 어떤 일이든 기념이 필요하다면 수건은 빠지지 않았습니다. 수건은 단순한 기념을 넘어 자리를 함께한 이들에게 전하는 답례의 형식으로도 널리 쓰였습니다. 사치품을 피하고 실용적인 물건으로 감사를 전하자는 사회적 흐름 속에서 적당한 가격에 의미를 담을 수 있는 수건은 가장 보편적인 선택이었습니다.

나의 세계, 트럼프 카드
My World - Playing Cards

여행을 갈 때마다 그 지역을 떠올릴 수 있는 트럼프 카드를 기념품 삼아 샀어요. 여행 가면 사진엽서 같은 것을 많이들 사지만 그건 한 장뿐이고, 트럼프 카드는 한 묶음이 52장이라서 더 많은 것을 볼 수 있거든요. 이렇게 모아 온 카드들이 벌써 100묶음이 넘었네요. 이것들을 보고 있으면 내가 갔던 곳, 그때의 재미난 일들 모두가 떠올라요. 오랜 시간이 흘렀고, 또 이렇게나 멀리 떨어진 나라의 기억들인데 말이죠. 그런 의미에서 이것들은 저에게는 세계라고 할 수 있겠네요.

저는 운 좋게도 2018년 평창 동계올림픽에서 성화 봉송 주자로 참여할 수 있었습니다. 그때 입었던 옷과 모자 등을 기념으로 가지고 있습니다. 이 옷들을 꺼내볼 때면 그날 제가 성화에 빌었던 소원도 기억나고 새로운 도전을 할 용기도 얻어요. 이 옷은 제가 지나온 시간이기도 하고, 제가 나아갈 시간에 대해서도 메시지를 주는 것 같아요.
